July 4th, 2010 – a day we remember the birth of a Nation. Thomas Jefferson said this should be a great day of celebration across the land, with food, dance and guns, fireworks if you will, to commemorate the founding of The United States of America. As we gather with family and friends it is fitting not only to remember and celebrate but to give thanks to God who has made all of this possible.
I had the privilege this day at our church here in Mobile, to hear an inspiring message from bestselling author and scholar Stephen Mansfield. He talked of the Covenant with God this people have made, from the Mayflower Compact to the Declaration of Independence, and reminded all in the audience that the greatness of our Nation comes from a Covenant God, who has poured out blessing on this land to make his own name great among the Nations. He made a reasoned one passionate call for the church, not a majority, not the Whole country – but just a few willing to humble themselves are pray, to stand up in these troubled times and seek forgiveness and healing for a Nation. And believing his Covenant of Grace through Jesus Christ – that is exactly what I do here today.
It is the 4th of July ~ The year of our Lord 2010 ~ and we call upon our Holy God to forgive us and pour out His Spirit on this land once again, in a time of war and when there are rumors of war – at a time of disaster along our Gulf Coasts – at a time when few seek God and believe in His Son – we pray. We place the fate of our Nation in his hands alone. We pray that our leaders would be humbled and seek his Knowledge and will, and give Him the Glory and thereby show the people the true and Living Way.
This is a day and a time for the church to reach out as never before and give a helping hand to our neighbor, and set aside all anger and division. We can be the hands of Christ, His feet to walk in the path of others less fortunate, and give aid and comfort in their time of need. It is also the late hour of Grace, and the time for those who do not believe, to see through his people, a God not of wrath and vengeance, but of mercy and Peace who is just as surely reaching out to bless the fallen heart, as he is to bless his people. Humanity is at war with itself, and we have lost all capacity to hold back our own self annihilation. So once again this nation can be a shining city on a hill, a light to the Nations.
We are a Christian Nation, a Nation with a Manifest Destiny and a unique purpose in the plan of the Nations. This Independence Day we celebrate freedom, the ultimate Liberty, signed and sealed in blood, and humbly bow to the one True King of this Nation, and all Nations.
We hold these truths to be self–evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
